Library Curriculum

The library at Immaculate Conception is the hub for reading fun.  Students begin to explore books with the librarian in PreK as they listen and enjoy a book weekly.  In Kindergarten the students learn how to choose books and take them back to class as well as listening and enjoying many books.  First grade begins to learn and understand the Accelerated Reader program and the enjoyment of reading independently.   Second- through sixth-grade continue to use the Accelerated Reader Program and enjoy reading independently.

Several other topics are taught during weekly library classes including Dewey Decimal, Magazines, Reference books, OPAC, and STEM fun with Maker Space.

There are several rewards programs in place to encourage our students to read, read, read every day.  Quarterly, the students in K-6 shop in an "AR Store" and spend all the points they earned while taking AR tests.  Once a month the librarian tells the students how many words they have read for that month which can earn them prizes.  Once a student reaches one million words they are given a book to keep for their own personal library.

Reading is also encouraged in Jr. High even though they do not attend a weekly class in the library.

Special Programs

Accelerated Reader

The Accelerated Reader (AR) program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books on their reading level, read independently, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. Students get a percentage of these points based on how many of the test questions they get right. The program tracks their progress over the course of the school year.
